Abstract

This descriptive correlational study was conducted to identify the degrees of performance in health promoting behaviors and to identify the correlation between self-efficacy, and health promoting behaviors of middle school students. The subjects were 431 middle school students who live in Gwangju, Korea. The data were collected by self-reporting questionnaires from 6th to 17th of May, 2003. The instruments were a questionnaire of general characteristics, Health Promoting Lifestyle Profile developed by Walker et al. (1987), Self-Efficacy Scale developed by Shereret et al. (1982). The collected data were analyzed using SPSS program for descriptive statistics, and Pearson's correlation coefficients. The results of the study were summarized as follows; Performance degrees in health promoting behaviors showed significant positive correlations with self-efficacy of middle school students (r=.365, p=.001). In conclusion, self-efficacy was the significant influencing factor on the health promoting behaviors of middle school students. These results showed that nursing interventions and health education program for promoting self-efficacy of middle school students should be developed.
